At Berry Pomeroy we are dedicated to providing our Residents with the best possible care, maintaining their dignity and encouraging their independence.

We aim to provide a homely and welcoming environment for them to enjoy and continue to live with as much independence and freedom of choice as possible.

But don’t just take our word for it, here is what our Residents have to say…

Muriel

“Before I came to Berry Pomeroy I lived all alone in a small house in town. Unfortunately I collapsed at home the result of this was a trip to hospital for a couple of weeks.

The hospital suggested that I would benefit from a couple of weeks respite in a care home and arranged for me to go to Berry Pomeroy.

I was given a lovely room and although it was very strange everyone was so friendly I soon settled down.

I had two weeks to think about the future and to build up my confidence to start walking again that when the two weeks were up I decided to stay and make it my new permanent home, for in my own mind I knew it was the right time.”

Geoff

“My first impression was how friendly and caring the staff were. Second what a high standard all the fixtures and fittings were, particularly in my bedroom.

The food also is very good. High quality and we have a choice. On my nephews second visit they remarked how much healthier I looked.

A lot of activities are organised to keep us mentally and physically active. I would be very happy to finish my days here.”

Gwen

“I’ll never go into a Care Home! Have you ever said this?

I have; and now I have lived in one for five years, and never regretted my decision.

No housework – not even washing up. A menu suited to all tastes and needs and well prepared meals. Activities to help us keep as fit as possible and pleasantly occupied.

But what I value more than anything is the company of friends, enjoying my own room when I wish, and friendly capable Carers within call.

All this can be found here at Berry Pomeroy.”

Name

"You will probably be feeling rather lost and anxious because you are in a strange place and do not know quite what is going to happen to you with people you don't know. We want you to know that we understand because we all felt like that at first.

Your room is your home now and you may not remember just how you got there. This building has quite a number of rooms and you have to get used to the different corridors. But the Carers and other residents will help you.

When you don't want to stay in your room you could go to one of the two lounges. If you ring your bell a Carer will show you the way until you can find your own way.

No one will tell you when to go to bed or when to get up, you can decide, but a Carer will come to give you your medication and tell you when.

There are several activities for the morning and afternoon and it helps you to get to know the other residents and feel at home if you join in. You can always just watch everyone.

This guide you have been given will tell you lots of useful information but you can ask us Residents or a Carer a question at any time. We hope you enjoy it here as much as we do.”

Tim Firth, Trustee said: “We are overwhelmed by the transformation of this Home and are delighted with its new look. Berry Pomeroy still provides the same high quality care for its Residents but this new look and feel has brightened up the bedrooms and the image of this Residential Care Home.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) are the regulator of health and social care in England. They carried out a visit at Berry Pomeroy on 30 August 2013 and inspected the following essential standards:

Care and welfare of people who use services

Cleanliness and infection control

Safety and suitability of premises

Staffing

Complaints

We are delighted to announce that all these standards were being met and that Berry Pomeroy was compliant with the regulation. Below is a summary of the CQC inspection.

CQC looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, observed how people were being cared for and checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care. They talked with carers and / or family members and talked with staff.

People we spoke with told us, “The home is lovely,” and “The staff are very good. I have nothing to complain about.” We examined four care plans and spoke to people and staff. One person told us, “The food very good. I don’t like fish and I am always offered alternatives.” We found that care at the home was very person centred and ensured the welfare and safety of people.

The home employed a dedicated housekeeper and assistant as well as someone solely to do the laundry. As a result the home was cleaned to a high standard. We found that there were systems in place to maintain standards and minimise risk of infection.

We looked at the entire building in relation to its suitability and safety. The home was well designed and adapted to provide a safe and comfortable place for people to live and receive the support they required. There was also a well maintained level accessible garden for people to enjoy. Individual rooms were well decorated, comfortable and homely.

We spoke to staff who told us they felt well supported and ‘listened to.’ They told us they were encouraged and supported if they wanted to do more training. Staffing levels were generous and this was reflected in the high standards of all aspects of care provided at the home.

People at the home told us they would feel comfortable if they ever felt the need to complain. We saw a prominently displayed notice in the entrance hall explaining how to complain and were shown the complaints file.
